It is a very enchanting and innovative chapter of the franchise. HoMM3 was mostly an expanded HoMM2 with a very different coat of paint, while HoMM4 kept most of the structure and mechanics of the previous games, but changed how some of them worked radically.įor the most part the game succeeded. And it turned out to be an apt description. Before the release of HoMM3, a NWC spokesperson said that HoMM3 was going to be evolutionarily, while HoMM4 was going to be revolutionary. HoMM4 is a game that any fan of the series should play some time. But with the exception of HoMM4, telling stories have never been a major focus for the series. (The city screens is an exception to this.)Īnother one is that the way the story is presented in the campaign feels extremely cheesy, and not in a good way. It is nowhere near the level of HoMM2-HoMM4, but fits the game well.Ī minor mark against the game is that the use of a 3D-engine feels like a devolution for the series, rather than the opposite. The music in this game is good and is composed by the same composers who did it in the previous games. Personally I think the city screens from HoMM2 and HoMM3 are better, but the ones in HoMM5 are a great addition to the series. HoMM 5 continues the legacy of inspiring and breathtaking city screens from HoMM1-3, and takes it to the next level technically by making them in full 3D with camera movement. But at least it is a consistent style, and the game actually has many fans that like the way the game looks.Ī noteworthy exception from the overall bad look of the game are the city screens. The main map has lost almost all the wonder of HoMM1-4, and the style in which the units are depicted seems heavily influenced by the one used by Blizzard. ![]() The major one is the art style, which I really dislike. Mechanically the game is solid, but it has some things going against it. ![]() Number 5 was made by a different team, but kept many of the mechanics of HoMM3 and added several interesting new ones. But I would really recommend you to check out HoMM4 and HoMM5 as well, because they are both very good games which you will probably like. Give them a try, as both are crazy cheap these days to get.Įdit: forgot to add that 4 is a bit unbalanced in vanilla, if you're very concerned about balance the equilibris patch does a great job of balancing the game. ![]() Hated 6, and enjoyed 7 mostly, but there was a lot of jank you had to ignore to enjoy it, so I definitely understand it's not for everyone. Also the soundtrack for 4 is a mastahpiece. If you don't go in with any expectations about what the game "should" be and just enjoy it, You'll have a great time with it. People were all angry about 4 on release, but given time a lot of people have come to realize that 4 is a great game, just different. It came right after 3, which was considered perfection, so they tried to make things a bit different. 4 is also very good, probably has the best story in the series, but it's different. 5 is like a newer, fancier version of 3, so you'll almost certainly like that one. Heroes 4 and 5 are both fun and worth playing.
